Jeremiah 29:1-14
“Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders of the captivity, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon. (This was after Jeconiah the king, and the queen, and the eunuchs, and the officials of Judah and Jerusalem, and the carpenters, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem.) It was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah (whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon), saying:
"Thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, to all who have been carried away captive whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and dwell in them; and plant gardens and eat their fruit. Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters; so that you may increase there and not diminish. Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace. For thus says the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, and do not listen to the dreams which they dream. For they prophesy falsely to you in My name. I have not sent them, says the LORD.
"For thus says the LORD: When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place. For I know the plans that I have for you, says the LORD, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you shall call upon Me, and you shall come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. You shall seek Me and find Me, when you shall search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the LORD, and I will turn away your captivity and gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you, says the LORD, and I will bring you back into the place from where I caused you to be carried away captive” (MEV).
1 Peter 5:6-11
"If you bow low in God’s awesome presence, he will eventually exalt you as you leave the timing in his hands.
"Pour out all your worries and stress upon him and leave them there, for he always tenderly cares for you.
"Be well balanced and always alert, because your enemy, the devil, roams around incessantly, like a roaring lion looking for its prey to devour. Take a decisive stand against him and resist his every attack with strong, vigorous faith. For you know that your believing brothers and sisters around the world are experiencing the same kinds of troubles you endure. And then, after your brief suffering, the God of all loving grace, who has called you to share in his eternal glory in Christ, will personally and powerfully restore you and make you stronger than ever. Yes, he will set you firmly in place and build you up. And he has all the power needed to do this—forever! Amen" (TPT).
APPLICATION
- Jeremiah had a word for the exiles in Babylon – they would be there for a long time – 70 years – but they would never be forgotten by God. The exiles were to be encouraged that in the midst of a difficult situation, to continue to seek God with their whole hearts. At the end of the period of exile, God already had good plans ready to manifest.
- The journey to your triumph will involve suffering, because we live in a fallen world and because we can never stay in perfect tune with God's will. But God has a plan to bless you in your triumph and beyond your triumph!
- Stay faithful, keeping Jesus Christ at the center of your life, and you can have hope that your current achievement will not be the greatest thing that ever happens to you or for you!
- With God there is always more. With God there is always greater. Stay faithful to Him, and stay confident that His plans will bless you!
