No Fear Only Believe

While He was still speaking, some came from the house of the synagogue ruler and said, Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further? As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synagogue, Do not be afraid, only believe.
- Mark 5:35-36

Jairus was desperate. His daughter was ill, and doctors couldn’t help her. Jairus had heard of Jesus, and went to find Him. He said, “My little daughter is lying at the point of death. I ask You, come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be healed. And she will live.”

Jesus didn’t say anything, but simply went with the heartbroken father. There was still hope. The man’s daughter was sick to the point of death, but not yet dead. Surely, Jairus believed that this miracle worker could answer the cry of his heart and rescue his little girl from death.

As Jairus, Jesus and the disciples made their way through the crowds, there was an interruption. Someone touched Jesus; this touch caused a stir, and it stopped Jesus on His way to Jairus’ home. There’s an old adage that says, “Good news travels fast; bad news travels faster.” During this delay, servants from Jairus’ home arrived to tell him that his daughter was dead.

To Jairus, death had the final word, and it was over. His trip home would culminate in burying his daughter. Jesus overheard the conversation, and said, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” Even death could not overcome the power of God working through the life and ministry of Jesus. He raised the little girl from the dead, to the amazement of her parents.

Like Jairus, you may need a “right now” miracle. You’ve prayed, you’ve read the Bible, you’ve done all you know to do, but what you’ve been believing God for seems unreachable. Jesus gave two directives to Jairus, and His word is the same to you today. First, do not be afraid. Fear will rise up like a giant to overwhelm you when you hear bad news, or when there has been a sudden or unexpected change in circumstances. Resist the pressure to give in to fear. Jesus is with you, just as He was with Jairus.

Next, Jesus said, “…only believe.” This was not and is not a suggestion—it is a command. Faith in God will move your mighty mountain. God is pleased and you will be blessed when you take God at His word. You can expect Him to fulfill what He said. He has never failed nor forsaken you, and He will not do so now. Allow faith to rise in your heart, and see what God does on your behalf. Remember, the atmosphere of expectancy is the breeding ground for your miracle!
